New Impetus For Indian Subcontinent

Importers are reportedly looking more and more towards the Indian subcontinent as a means of sourcing products. With the suggestion being that the region, led by India and Pakistan, is becoming more suitable as a trading partner.
The Indian logistics sector seems to be expanding as one market after the introduction of GST last year. GST – or Goods and Service Tax – was introduced last July as a single value-added tax across India’s 29 states. GST reduced the individual taxation enforced at border checkpoints which was a burden on the logistics sector and a drain on the economy.
India is now starting to see the rise of national distribution centres and hubs that are improving the internal networks. There have been setbacks, such as July’s eight day national transport strike, although this was widely accepted to be more aligned to a global phenomenon, as it followed similar events in Brazil and China.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s new leader – Imran Kahn – is targeting international trading growth as a means to combat poverty. While it is early days, there is new optimism that the Oxford educated ex-cricketer will improve Pakistan’s image and relationship with global partners.

With Brexit on the horizon, and occasional volatility in capacity and pricing from the Far East, UK importers appear to be looking closer at trading and sourcing products with countries throughout the subcontinent.
