The UK will commence its Easter celebrations this week with two public holidays either side of the coming weekend, meaning two short weeks in a row.

Therefore, for our overseas visitors, the UK’s Easter schedule will look like this.

Thursday 18th April – Business As Usual
Friday 19th April – National Public Holiday
Monday 22nd April – National Public Holiday
Tuesday 23rd April – Business As Usual

So, how will Easter holidays affect the rest of the globe?

Thursday 18th April
A number of Central and South American countries start public holidays earlier by celebrating Maundy or Holy Thursday. Regions of India will also mark this day with a public holiday, as does Spain and Denmark.

Friday 19th April
Good Friday is a public holiday throughout many countries in Western Europe, Central & South America, The Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is also recognised by some parts of Eastern Europe and some African states. In Asia it will be a public holiday in Hong Kong, India, Myanmar, Singapore and Sri Lanka and in the US it is not a federal holiday but will be recognised in most states.

Monday 22nd April
Easter Monday is very similar to Good Friday, although only an Asian public holiday in Hong Kong and India. Again, Easter Monday is not a federal holiday in the United States, although it is observed as a holiday in some states, but fewer than Good Friday.

Some countries recognise their Easter date based on the Julian calendar, which often differs from the Gregorian calendar that is used by many western countries. This is more apparent in Eastern Europe, where countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, to name but a few, will be celebrating Easter between April 26th and 29th.
