World’s Largest Sea Bridge Opens
The world’s longest sea crossing bridge opened to traffic yesterday, connecting Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.
The bridge, spanning 34 miles and designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, was officially opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.
About half of its length has been built high enough to allow today’s mega container ships through, while a 4 mile section in the middle lowers into an undersea tunnel between two man-made islands.
The bridge, which also links Hong Kong International Airport, is expected to be a boost for airfreight and logistics in the region. Travelling between Zhuhai and Hong Kong previously took around four hours – the new journey has been reduced to around 30 minutes.
