Responding to operational and commercial challenges in global shipping
Senior figures from across the freight and logistics sector have come together to assess the growing impact of instability in the Gulf region and its implications for global supply chains.
Scott Baker, Ocean Commercial Director at Uniserve, recently attended a meeting of the British International Freight Association (BIFA) Surface Policy Group, where members discussed the deteriorating security situation and the operational pressures now facing shippers, forwarders and carriers alike.
The session brought together industry experts to review the consequences of restricted access through key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Presentations from BIFA and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers highlighted widespread vessel delays, voyage diversions and increased risks to crew safety, alongside sharp rises in marine fuel costs and war risk insurance premiums.
Participants shared real world experiences of disruption, including vessels being declared “end of voyage” mid route and cargo discharged at alternative ports with limited prior consultation. These scenarios are creating significant challenges for supply chain planning, contractual certainty and cost control.
A central focus of the discussion was the growing use of emergency surcharges and the lack of transparency surrounding how and when additional costs are applied. Members raised concerns about the downstream impact on customers, particularly where on forwarding cargo closer to final destinations results in further delays and unplanned expense.
The meeting reinforced the importance of collective industry engagement at a time when conditions remain volatile. Clear communication, greater visibility and informed decision making were identified as critical factors in helping shippers navigate ongoing disruption and mitigate risk across their supply chains.
Uniserve continues to engage actively at industry level to ensure customer interests are represented and that operational realities are clearly understood as the situation evolves. By working closely with industry bodies, partners and customers, the business remains focused on delivering reliable, transparent ocean freight solutions in uncertain conditions.
