Global Supply Chain Motion & Coronavirus

Feb 4, 2020 | Article, News

As further stringent restrictions and travel bans are imposed on citizens in Mainland China, airlines continue to halt flights in and out of the country amid precautions to contain the virus outbreak.

Coronavirus is made up of a unique pairing of viruses typically spread between different species of animals. The infection originated in animals and spread through to humans, having infected over 20,000 individuals with 425 fatalities to date in China alone. The outbreak is in its third month with little signs of slowing, causing a global economic pain.

Wuhan, the centre of the coronavirus outbreak is China’s seventh biggest city and a major motor manufacturing hub. The city has been locked down to prevent further infection. Production continues stranded at a halt with closures across manufacturing including Toyota who announced production intends to resume after the 9th February. The port of Wuhan has been closed indefinitely, whilst other ports across the country are either on shut down or have reduced operating hours. The global supply chain motion has already been effected with anticipated delays expected across the world.

Latest developments include the temporary office closures for business giants in the likes of Starbucks, Amazon, Microsoft and Google- a corporate decision to protect staff from the infection. Where possible, companies in the likes of Facebook and Morgan Stanley are asking staff to work from home to keep business flowing.

Workers across the supply chain industry also attempt to work remotely where possible, with some of our own partners and offices in China working hard to monitor the situation and effectively respond to any delays. Companies are encouraged to get in touch and review any expected timeframes.
