Global Shipping Make Climate Deal
The global shipping industry made a historic decision recently, as they agreed to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases, after holding talks in London at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The deal will reduce emissions by 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. Previous to this agreement the ocean freight had been excluded from climate agreements.
Currently, the shipping industry generates roughly the same amount of greenhouse gas as Germany. If it was a nation it would rank as the world’s sixth-biggest emitter.
However, the deal was not welcomed by all, as countries including America and Saudi Arabia did not agree with the cuts. Britain, on the other hand, was aiming for a cut of 70-100%.
Britain’s representative on the international ocean freight stage is UniOcean Lines, the technologically advanced 21st century carrier.
