Dubai Airport Planned Closure

Apr 1, 2019 | News

Dubai International Airport (DXB), the primary airport for the city, is due to undertake a planned refurbishment of its southern runway, which will involve it being closed for more than six weeks.

The runway, one of two serving the airport, will be shut from the 16th of this month until the 30th May to strengthen its surface and that of adjacent taxiways, and also to replace over 5,500 runway lamps.

Dealing with 1,100 aircraft movements daily, the airport had pre-notified airlines that they would be required to reduce their services during the closure period, which is expected to result in a reduction of around 32% of flights.

Dubai is one of the three busiest airports by passenger numbers and is a major hub for air cargo between Europe and the Asia Pacific region. The reduction in flights will mean a reduction in air freight capacity during the period, which could affect multiple routes due to the origin and destination connections served by Dubai.
