COVID-19: Fears rise as overnight statistics double
Fears have risen on a global scale following the rise in the COVID-19 death toll this morning. China’s Hubei province, the heart of the epidemic has declared 242 new deaths on Thursday morning, twice as many as the previous day. New infection statistics also appear to have jumped by 15,000.
Some officials are not yet alerted or surprised by the surge in numbers, seeing the latest reports as a positive step in capping the spread of the virus. Chinese statistics published to date were not accurate, mainly effected by the overwhelming strain on the Chinese healthcare system, leading to an instant weakening of medical resources across infected areas. Correcting statistical in-accuracies will provide a clearer overview of the COVID-19 status over the coming days, indicating whether there is cause for bigger concern.
