Coronavirus & Loose Cargo from China
Is it safe to handle inbound loose cargo from China?
There are growing concerns within the industry on the safety of handling inbound loose cargo from China, with some ports refusing to accept shipments amid fears of infection.
Information on both the UK Government and World Health Organisation websites confirm that the virus does not survive on objects for long and as such those receiving packages from China are not at risk of catching the new coronavirus.
Workers who handle inbound cargo should nonetheless conduct risk assessments with consideration to providing Personal Protective Equipment.
Customs in China have begun to see more movement as sites begin to partially re-open. This gives opportunity to find solutions in moving goods out via sea and air modes to help overcome the limited flight options which still exclude Mainland China.
This weekend is being viewed as a key indicator in reviewing the spread of the virus. The growth in new cases should start to slow by Sunday if the imposed travel restrictions have been effective in containing the virus. If the number of infected continue to grow exponentially, further extensions to travel restrictions may be implemented.
