COVID-19: Container shortages

Uniserve are continuously working on tailoring unique logistical strategies to support our clients supply chains which have been affected by COVID-19. Widespread disruptions continue with latest reports of container shortages for European transit.
Multiple scheduled departures for all transport modes have been cancelled since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak on a global scale. This includes an estimated 46% of cancellations on major Asia to North Europe ocean routes. Rotterdam, one of Europe’s busiest ports, predicts a fall in volume in 2020 from throughput volume of 14.8 million TEU (20-foot equivalent units) in 2019.
Reports of container shortages follow this week as pressure mounts on the demand for product transit. Blank sailings and reefer congestion are key contributors in some regions whilst the surge in demand coupled with limited and restricted transit availability add to supply chain stagnation.
It is predicted that container shortages will continue globally as production in China returns to normal, bringing with it another wave of demand and congestion. Spikes in air demand are also now beginning to show, resulting in capacity shortages and price increases. Challenges are expected further down the supply chain including increased costs and shortages of other commodities. Uniserve will continue to monitor the market, providing live updates as the situation develops. We encourage our clients to notify us of all of their predicted requirements as early as possible to ensure the best strategy is put in place.
