Brexit Update – House of Lords Debate

After three years of negotiations and debates, the House of Commons voted once more to pass Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal last week, with the House of Lords expected to review and debate this week.
Should the House of Lords decide on any amendments then the bill will move back to the commons who can decide to reject them.
Either way, there will be a final vote in the commons to approve the deal, with or without amendments. With Johnson sitting on a large majority, the expectation is for the UK to leave the EU at the end of this month.
The challenging process of agreeing a long term trading arrangement with the EU will then commence, with the UK government insisting this is achievable by the end of 2020. The prospect of the UK leaving with no deal is still on the table, although we will be trading as usual for the rest of this year at least.
The Government is so confident in Brexit happening this month, that they have announced the closing of the Brexit department on 31st January.
On Monday, the M20 motorway, which links the London orbital M25 with Dover, will be closing for two weeks to remove barriers that were installed for a potential no-deal Brexit. A section of the road between junctions seven and nine will return to their normal state for the first time since Operation Brock was introduced.
Under Operation Brock, one carriageway was to be reserved for HGVs heading to Dover, with all other traffic restricted to a contraflow system on the opposite side.
Uniserve will continue to maintain updates, as we have continued to do throughout the process, on our Brexit Page.
