Bangladesh Strike Update*

by | Mar 2, 2017

** UPDATE Thursday 2nd March – Indications are that the majority of transport workers have returned to work and the situation is returning to normal. There will be some backlogs to clear.

ORIGINAL POST:

A nationwide indefinite strike by transport workers has entered its second day in Bangladesh and is expected to wreak havoc on domestic and international trade if it is not fully resolved soon.

Transport workers took to the streets when a court sentenced a bus driver to life in prison for a 2011 accident that caused fatalities. This was later intensified when a truck driver was sentenced to death for another incident in Savar.

During Tuesday and Wednesday, the strike spread across the country and the government has asked the transport workers to respect the court verdicts and heed the sufferings of travellers.

Early indications are that some bus drivers have responded to the governments call, but it is unclear whether the majority of transport workers will be returning to work any time soon.

As a result of the strike, cargo movement within Bangladesh had reportedly come to a standstill in the past two days and some factories had closed their operations for security reasons.
