French farmers strikes cause motorway blocks disrupting European transport
French and Belgian farmers have stepped up their protests this week in retaliation to what they consider to be crippling regulation, alongside low wages, increased costs and other problems threatening their livelihoods.
Roadblocks and rolling blockades have spread across many French regions causing delays and motorway disruption around Paris.
On Wednesday, protests spread to Brussels, home to the EU HQ, where French farmers’ union Rural Coordination called for a demonstration against the “ever-increasing constraints of European regulations and ever-lower incomes”.
Following farmer unrest in Germany, Poland and Romania, France’s President Emmanuel Macron’s government has already withdrawn a contested draft farming law that would have helped more people become farmers.
