Industry scrambles to seek P&O alternatives
P&O Ferries’ controversial decision to sack 800 sailors and vessel crew – and its resultant suspension of services – is set to impact cross Channel and Irish Sea freight over the next week or so. The sudden decision by P&O owners DP World to dismiss its staff without warning via video chat has sparked protests at UK ports and drawn widespread criticism from unions, Government officials and industry commentators.
It is expected to take around 10 days for P&O to train agency staff replacements, during which time hauliers will be forced to seek alternative ferry providers. P&O is directing customers to rival operator DFDS as the most viable short-term option.
Uniserve’s daily European services to and from all EU countries will continue to operate normally – either via the Channel Tunnel or alternative ferry companies. It is possible, however, that some delays may occur due to overbooking and congestion at DFDS check-in.
