Manila – Volcano Ash Impacts Airfreight

Jan 13, 2020 | Article, News

Manila’s international airport has been closed since yesterday amid fears of a volcanic eruption in the Philippines. Local authorities declared that airborne ash posed hazards to aircraft in the area, which could spread to wider regions across South East Asia.

The Taal volcano, located 45 miles south of the Philippines capital, began spewing lava yesterday, raising fears of a hazardous eruption being possible within hours or days. While it is one of the world’s smallest volcanoes, it has recorded at least 34 eruptions in the past 450 years.

The current crisis started when Taal emitted a huge plume of ash, which triggered a large scale evacuation of 8,000 people from the immediate area.
