Government’s Customs Union Stance
Prime Minister May, whilst on a visit to the West Midlands, said leaving the customs union would allow the UK to create new trade deals around the world, adding that she is seeking to obtain a “frictionless” border with the EU.
On the other hand, the Labour Party has been campaigning for the UK to join a new customs union post-Brexit, stating it would leave the current one but negotiate a treaty that would “do the work of the customs union”.
The House of Lords is continuing its examination of the government’s key EU Withdrawal Bill before the MPs get their own chance to debate the issue on Thursday 26th April.
Last week’s amendment would not necessarily keep the UK in the customs union, however, it would obligate ministers to report on steps to negotiate a continued union.
Customs Insights Managing Director – Terry Clear – stated “Customs Insights have been preparing for the UK to leave the customs union for some time. Being based in Dover, we are in a location that is going to be heavily impacted by a withdrawal.
Last year we moved to larger premises and have been resourcing to cope with some of the demand that thousands of additional customs entries will bring.
If importers are concerned about the probable outcome, then we are happy to help with any enquiries, as we are ideally positioned for the road ahead.”
