REDUCE COSTS

The port-centric approach to logistics can reduce customer costs in a number of significant ways:

  • Firstly, and most obviously, is the removal of the normal port to distribution centre freight costs. This ‘DC bypass’ enables the holding of product at port (at our facility) until call off, thereby avoiding costly wasted freight miles (empty running between regional distribution centres and the port is eliminated).
  • By optimising the supply chain in this way, factory to shelf unit costs are also driven down.
  • With the FMDC so close to the port, there are far more opportunities to reduce or even remove costly quay rent and / or detention fees.
  • Thanks to the scale, scope and range of services available at FMDC, customers are able to aggregate large volumes of stock and in so doing benefit from economies of scale – consolidating operations to cut outbound delivery costs
  • Choosing a port-centric option also means a reduction in the environmental cost of transporting goods from origin to customer – fewer freight miles means a smaller carbon footprint.

REDUCE COMPLEXITY

The port-centric approach simplifies the supply chain by removing a number of handling stages throughout the storage and distribution process:

  • In one seamless flow from this one site, containers can be unloaded, goods can be checked, palletised and put into storage until ready to be picked and distributed when required.
  • The FMDC allows customers to hold inventory at the UK’s largest port of entry for containers until the optimal time to allocate stock to its final destination.
  • With global supply chains experiencing major disruptions, users of Uniserve’s new facility will be able to ‘de-risk’ their cargo flows – removing uncertainties with buffer stocks held at point of import to the UK. As a result, it is possible to replenish on call-off or to ship directly to store / end user.
