Calais Queues – A Future Indication?

Mar 7, 2019 | Brexit

Protests over Brexit and working conditions this week caused lorry queues to stretch back for miles at the port of Calais in France.

On Monday, French customs officials began strike action aimed to demonstrate how inefficient checks will be and what will happen if greater controls are put in place should the UK leave the EU on 29th March.

Officials are working their normal hours but refusing to do overtime. They are doing longer customs checks than usual, which is creating traffic jams and delays.

Staff at the border have demanded higher pay and greater resources. Their aim is to attract attention to their difficult work conditions, which they have stated will only get worse once Brexit happens.

The French government has announced the recruitment of an extra 700 customs officials to cope with the demand. However, some unions fear that won’t be enough to tackle the issue.

This may be a very good indication of the future ahead, so we encourage you to visit our Brexit page to be aware of a number of things you, your suppliers and customers must do to enable trade and movement of goods between the UK and Europe in the event of no deal.
