Key ports on Canada’s West Coast, including Vancouver and Prince Rupert12 have shut down in relation to the ongoing labour dispute.
A walkout started on Monday (4th November) following a 72-hour strike notice issued by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Ship & Dock Foremen Local 514.
In response, the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) implemented a lockout affecting over 700 foremen at the Port of Vancouver. The lockout is a precautionary measure to ensure a “safe and orderly wind down of operations”.
Concurrently, a separate labour dispute is affecting the Port of Montreal, Canada’s largest port in the east. Two terminals at the Port of Montreal, which account for 40% of its container traffic, have been blocked since 31st October 2024.
